The Dangers Of Children Playing On Frozen Water

One of the most fun times of the year for children is during the winter season. Not because they love the cold weather so much, but what it can bring. Snow is like candy falling from heaven for children who are lucky enough to live in regions where it is abundant at certain times of the year. There is not much that children love more than throwing snowballs and building snowmen.

Snowballs and snowmen probably never did any child any harm other than give them some pretty frozen fingers and some red cheeks. As long as these are the activities they are engaging in things will be great. Sledding and ice skating are also fun things to do in the snow, but they can be a little more risky when it comes to getting hurt.

Kids are always adventurous and playing outdoors in the snow is no different than any other time. They will wonder off occasionally and perhaps get into things they should not. Sledding is fine and well as long as where they are playing is safe. The same can be said for ice skating. Broken bones do occur and most parents take something like that in stride as accidents that kids are bound to have occasionally even when they are supervised.

The one winter hazard that can be life threatening for kids is frozen water. If there are patches of ice, they can slide around and get more serious injuries than just a broken bone. Head injuries can happen if the slip onto obstacles near or on the ice.

Even more dangerous than playing on ice that might be on the sidewalk or a neighborhood street is the frozen water of a pond or swimming pool. Anytime there is a pond that has frozen over, kids are tempted to go out on it. It can take only one more step to fall through the ice and lead to death. If they are alone, it could be almost certain death. Even with friends nearby, many children have died because they could not be gotten out in time.

In severely cold water, it does not take very long for the body to start shutting down. If they are holding onto something for dear life, it can take a matter of minutes before they are forced to let go. IF you are a parent who lives in a snowy or icy region, please take precautions to make sure your children are playing only on areas that are safe. Make sure that pools are drained before freezing weather sets in. Local ponds should be fenced and guarded carefully during this time of year if there are children who live nearby.
