The Damage Lightning Can Cause

As any rainstorm can produce lightning, the likelihood of a fire started by this storm will increase with the degree of the storm or the length of the storm. Lightning can cause all kinds of damage because it can travel through your phone lines or it can travel along the water lines underground. You might have damage to these points, and they will usually start on fire after going into your home. If the lightning was to strike your phone line and you were on the phone inside your home, this strike will follow the power to its source: your phone. As water is a conductor, it isn't a good idea for you to be standing in water from maybe your bath or in a swimming pool.

The weather people tell us never to stand under a tree in a rainstorm or have any metal objects in or on any person because these attract lightning by either a direct hit or a side splash. Of course we all know what a direct hit means: the person was hit. A side splash happens when the lightning hits the tree or even an electric line traveling alone by its roots or the line itself. If you are standing anywhere near this source, you might be hit. You could be in your car sitting for a red light and have your car hit by lightning, which could result in your touching this metal and getting struck with what is called a contact voltage.

If this were to happen, you would need to just try to sit out the storm and not touch anything or find something that you can use to keep this current from traveling through your arm or body. If someone comes up to the car, tell them not to touch it and call someone to come with the right equipment to open your doors. There is one more way that you can feel like you have been struck by this lightning, and that is called the shock. You aren't hit directly or even indirectly by the lightning but by the shock wave electrifying them.

Lightning is dangerous to anything that is in its path and even things not in its path. We need to really watch where we are in the event of becoming the victim of this storm because this lightning can cause severe damage to you and the things around you. This lightning can kill you, hurt you severely, or burn down your home and everything in it.
