The Characteristics and Benefits of Rain Chains

If youve never heard of a rain chain before, you might be having trouble visualizing exactly what this device is and how it works. Most homes these days have a gutter system that collects rainwater during storms and channels it to a downspout that guides the water to the ground. With rain chains, instead of a downspout, you have a series of cup-shaped containers, strung in a vertical line, that in essence perform the same duty as a downspout. These containers guide water from the roof to the ground, channeling it from container to container through holes at their center.

How to use a rain chain

The process of hanging a rain chain begins with removing the old downspout, which typically entails little more than removing a couple of screws and support brackets, and then removing the downspout itself. This will leave an opening at the top of your gutter. From this opening, a metal support attachment, similar in shape to a V with wings stretching to either side, can be placed over the gutter opening as the support structure for the rain chain. From this support, the rain chain can be attached and hang down freely to where it can empty onto the ground.

Types of rain chains

There is a huge selection when it comes to the types and varieties of rain chains available. The shape, size, style, and material your rain chain is made from can range significantly. Most rain chains are constructed from wood, metal or ceramics, but their containers may be elegantly crafted or quite plainly styled. Some people like a multitude of smaller chained containers, while others prefer a small number of larger containers. You may choose to have an elegantly designed chain or go instead for one made of copper that will naturally age and transform with time. The choice is really up to you. The great thing about rain chains is that they are easy to install and move, which means you can change them if you decide you want to try a different style.

Benefits

Now that you know more about rain chains, you might be saying to yourself, Okay, they sound neat, but why bother installing such a device? There are several answers to this question.

Who can deny that looking at a rain chain is more pleasing to the eye than the typical downspout. A rain chain is a beautiful addition to your home, not only enhancing your curb appeal but providing personal enjoyment as well. The rain chain not only makes for an interesting conversation piece but it is just fun to watch. There will still be people however, that question whether the aesthetic aspects of a rain chain arent outweighed by the functionality of the typical downspout.

Thats the great part of the rain chain -- not only is it nice to look at, but its functional as well. The rain chains containers still act to slow the flow of water from your gutters and channel water away from the house (unless youve chosen a version with only the chain). Whats better is that in colder climates, you no longer get ice blockages inside your downspout. These are instead replaced by beautiful ice flows that are captured and created by the rain chains unique design.
