The Canvas Of The Society

By:

My intensive research for a story in a video project enabled me to find a very inspiring and heart-breaking work of Joey Velasco (March 18, 1967 - July 20, 2010). The message of the painting delivered a deep impact to everyone. His painting taught me how to appreciate and value life.

Through his creativity of canvas painting, his sincerity for the welfare of the society was expressed. On our society, this social cancer is killing us slowly but we prefer to disregard it by competing each other to survive. We are aware for this situation but we are blinded by our personal interests.

Joey Velasco's work emphasized the real picture of our society on its downside. The depressing sighs of people in the eyes of every children in the painting defined as poverty, echoed to every soul but were never heard. It is precisely depicted on his obra, "The Last Supper" where it delivers social relevance by painting street children instead of apostles with Jesus. The children in the painting possessed "colorful" stories of their own.

They picture out something we should look upon. They do need our compassion since they are known as our hope in the future. Why are we keeping them closer to risks and social injustice? Why can't we afford to accommodate them and preserve their rights to live and get educated to lessen the percentage of poverty?

If we all helped a little, maybe these children wouldn't grow up to be heart hardened adults. I don't know how much it will help but doing nothing will hurt.

So we can't give enough to solve the poverty in the Philippines. I can't give enough. Not long after I came here I gave a child what I had in my pocket. I had no idea what I was giving. The child scoffed at my gift and it hardened my heart. The ungrateful child's reaction was poor but so was mine. I need to do better.

I even feel peer pressure not to help at all. To heck with that pressure. We need to do what is right.

Looking back at the painting, can you reach out for others who are in the grass root level of the society? Will you help or just stare for the rest of your life? The cancer of the society painted in the canvas may not affect you economic status today but you are still responsible for the generations next to you.
