The Best Presidents And Why They're In Your Coin Collection

By:

After forty-four presidents there begins to rise to the top those elect few widely esteemed as the best. These men have their faces carved into rock, cast into bronze, or stamped into coin collections. Who are they? Will there be room for others? Only time will tell.

Abraham Lincoln is widely regarded as the best president. Honest Abe with his towering 6'4'' frame helped to keep our nation intact during its most trying times. He held that a state did not have the right to secede from the Union and fought to preserve it. He was assassinated soon after winning his second term.

George Washington is the only other president to be featured on a bill and a coin. He won the Revolutionary War as general and served two terms before choosing to retire. He repudiated the title of King and lived out the sunset of his life in his home in Mount Vernon, Virginia.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt instituted the New Deal during his first hundred days in office. His Fireside Chats eased a depressed nation and as war approached in the 30's he determined to keep the U.S. neutral. When Pearl Harbor was attacked he entered the war and helped to bring it to a successful close. His rhetoric, like that of other great presidents, is extremely helpful to his reputation. He died in office, days before the war officially ended. He is the only president to have served more than two terms.

Thomas Jefferson used to be on the two dollar bill. Today he's only on the nickel. Writer of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson also drastically increased the size of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He is one of the most influential Founding Fathers.

Teddy Roosevelt is perhaps best known for creating the National Parks. An avid outdoorsman, he lived as a Dakota sheriff for some years in his twenties before returning and entering into politics. He was a Colonel in the War of Cuba and captured San Juan Hill with his Rough Riders. Roosevelt is also known for building the Panama Canal. He is not on any bills or coins, but he is on Mt. Rushmore.

Generally these presidents are considered the best five in history. Some may argue for Truman or Wilson or Jackson to be included in the highest echelon. As to whether they will be or not has yet to be determined. In the meanwhile, look at your bills and coins in your coin collections to admire the legacies of these great men.
