The Best 5 Guitar Solos Of All Time

The Best 5 Guitar Solos Of All Time

The simple truth is the selection procedure of the greatest guitar solos ever is a highly personal thing, which naturally will be different for every person. Nonetheless, this is my opinion on it and all completed with the maximum respect for any guitar solos which i have disregarded, or did not consider for my best five list. So here we go:

5. Although the track wasn't necessarily my sort of music, this specific guitar solo obtained legendary status. The band was the Carpenters, the power ballad was Goodbye To Love, and the guitarist was Tony Peluso. This particular solo was incredibly melodic and constructed brilliantly. Peluso made use of a Gibson 335 with humbucking pickups and created a great 'distorted sound' during the entire solo.

4. At number 4 we have the spectacular Dave Gilmore's dazzling solo on the Pink Floyd track Comfortably Numb. This solo was typical Gilmore in that it was melodic, tuneful and brilliantly stiched together. This solo had Gilmore's hallmark Stratocaster sound with echo and reverb all over it. On the whole an outstanding bit of guitar playing.

3. How could I have a top 5 guitar solos list without the inclusion of Jimi Hendrix somewhere. Not every single Hendrix record was my bag but Little Wing revealed Hendrix at his finest - the solo was a thing of beauty. Hendrix's guitar playing along with the sound was so much his own that he managed to get a typically Hendrix tone whether he used a Gibson guitar with humbucking pickups, or his normal Strat with single coil pickups.

2. Well I suppose this solo had to be someplace on the list and for me it is number two. The song is Stairway To Heaven and the guitarist is Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page. This was among those wonderful solos that built and built, with the ideal amount of improvisation around the original melody. This is probably the most renowned guitar solo out of them all. It was however, not performed on Page's infamous Gibson Les Paul Standard but on a Fender telecaster. When performing this track live in concert Page consistently utilised his Gibson SG double neck, allowing him to cover the 12 string and the six string elements of this song live on stage.

1. Well it was almost impossible to make a decision between Page's Stairway To Heaven and the Eagles' Hotel California, however the solo on Hotel California slightly tips it in my opinion. The fact is, this is somewhat unfair as there's more than one guitarist performing this, but it is nevertheless a complete lesson in how to developa guitar solo. Joe Walsh and Don Felder bounce off of each other superbly as this solo builds. It's almost as if whatever one can do the other one does better, but in reality they work together in perfect harmony and their two styles and electric guitar sounds merge faultlessly. That unquestionably vintage Les Paul Sound with exactly the required amount of drive is all over that particular guitar solo, total class.

So there you have my top five solos. Where might you ask is Lynryd Skynyrd's Free Bird, or what about Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton or Brian May? Like I stated, it is a personal thing and if I did the list in two weeks time it may well be completely different. All good fun though.
