The Benefits And Drawbacks Of Wind Turbine Power Generators

The Positives And Negatives Of Wind Turbine Power Generators

Nearly everybody is familiar with what a wind turbine is and how they produce energy, yet for those whom don't know I will explain. The conventional design resembles a tiny windmill on a toll structure. Electricity is made by the generator, housed inside the turbine casing, any time the rotor is spun by the wind. The generator is a common design composed of magnets and copper wires. There's almost nothing complicated about this type of generator.

There has to be sufficient wind to turn the blades for these machines to generate electricity. The normal height for wind turbines is actually 30 meters, which allows them to utilize the more powerful winds that take place at that height. The end result of the stronger wind at that elevation is that the turbines generate more electricity. All of this would not matter if there's no wind to begin with. Just before an installation of turbines is designed, thorough analysis of wind patterns for the projected site is reviewed. Many coastal places are ideal due to consistent high winds. In fact, the wind can adjust its direction which poses another downside for wind turbines. To adapt to varying wind directions, the turbines are fashioned to continually face into the wind, irrespective of direction.

Wind turbines can generate quite a lot of energy; one turbine may generate electricity for one house, or maybe they can be used to power machinery that does something like grinding grain. A battery backup that is replenished by the turbines, delivers power during times when no wind blows. One concern is the number of years required for the installation charges to be recovered in power savings. Unlike some other green energy methods, wind turbines will consistently work 24/7, providing there is wind. Wind turbines can certainly produce as much power at night as during the day, decreasing the battery storage demands in some cases. Turbines are extremely clean to run, eliminating worries about pollution. More turbines can reduce the causes of global warming that threaten the planet today. The energy source is also renewable, just like solar energy, since there is always wind blowing. This means that turbines will usually be able to produce electrical power if they are located in high wind regions.

As with just about anything there are some down sides of utilizing wind turbines for energy. Their structure makes them stand out, and some say they're unsightly for this reason. When clustered in groups, such as the massive commercial installations in coastal areas and even out at sea, precisely where there are high winds, they are not an attractive site. Noise pollution is an additional complaint because of the friction of the rotor on the shaft when it spins. While good for meeting the needs of human beings, they can be dangerous to birds and bats. The spinning rotors interrupt the bats' ability to steer clear of physical objects with their sonar readings. This doesn't happen often, but any time it does, it is regrettable.

Thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of wind turbines, they currently have a lot going in their favor. With proper planning they can be incredibly useful and beneficial.

Useful and Simple Hints for Daily Green Living

Virtually every day we are reminded by the media of the problem of pollution - created by humans - and the direct consequence thereof, global warming. A lot of people want to help fight the threat but have very little idea what to do. Well, you don't have to go out saving whales or putting out forest fires to provide assistance, you only need to simply follow a couple of easy tips to make a difference! Below are a number of ways in which you can contribute.

1. Never use a desktop PC when you can work on a laptop
Computers today are widely used, with many applications. Since laptop computers are fifty percent more energy efficient, always look to use a laptop instead of a regular desktop PC. There are also other positives to working on laptops; they are portable, which means you can take them anywhere with you and work and they're cheaper.

2. Try to walk rather than drive
One of the first things that come to mind when pollution is mentioned is cars. The burning of fuel makes an automobile run, but a byproduct is carbon dioxide and other deadly fumes emitted into the atmosphere. Cars are used all over the world every day, so overall they give off a lot of gases that are detrimental to the environment. To make less of a damaging impact on the environment, we must try walking instead of driving. Walk whenever the opportunity presents itself, but don't beat yourself up if it's not. Any short trips by car can probably be replaced by walking without any problems. Walking can be relaxing, great for your health as well as that of the environment, and save you a little money on the side.

3. Avoid leaving the faucet running when you're brushing your teeth
Because water is only a turn of the faucet away, we use it unthinkingly, and waste a lot as we do so. When you brush your teeth you should turn the tap off, otherwise you'll be wasting a lot of water. It's a considerable amount of water that is running out of the faucet in the two minutes of brushing your teeth. Prepare for brushing and save water by putting a sufficient amount for rinsing in a glass ahead of time.

4. Try taking quick showers instead of bathing
Taking a shower uses less electricity and water than taking a bath, so opt to shower. Just don't forget not to luxuriate in the shower; stay for too long and you're back to being wasteful. Be sure that you shower quickly or else you may as well have had a bath!

5. Don't leave lights turned on day in and day out
Vacant rooms don't usually have to have the lights turned on. What's the point of illuminating a room when there's nobody in it? You'll save energy in this manner, which will save you some money and help the environment. When there's sunlight outside, don't turn on the inside lights since the sunlight will provide lots of light to your home.

These tips are extremely simple and won't cost you anything to follow through. In fact, they'll probably save you money. So listen to the call - begin living green.
