The Beginning Of The Golf Swing

By:

The golf backswing is the beginning of the motion of hitting the ball. Golf is the only sport where the player hitting the ball begins the action in baseball and other ball-and-stick sports, the ball motion is began by another player. That is why it is so hard to start the backswing when you begin playing. You stand there waiting for someone else to start the action. Though it is an unnatural movement, executing the backswing correctly is critical, because if something goes awry during this step, it is not likely that anything else good is going to follow.

The most common description of how to picture the backswing is winding a coil. You should feel the power you need to hit the ball storing up in the core of your body, ready to unwind and send the ball into a (hopefully straight and long) flight. The backswing is not actually one single step, as most players know. It is a series of muscle movements that, when done correctly, gets you to the top of your swing and sets you up for clean contact with the ball.

Most players spend countless hours trying to perfect their swing, never realizing that their level of fitness is crucial to doing it right. First, muscle strength and speed directly relate to ball-hitting power. Also, flexibility translates to power as well as accuracy. Last, but not least, exercise helps you become aware of each muscle in your body and what it is doing. This awareness gives you better control during each step of the golf swing, especially the critical golf backswing.

Improving your strength and flexibility takes time, but as soon as you begin a workout routine you will see noticeable improvements in your golf game. The first thing you will notice is that you have more stamina on the course. After 18 holes, you are less tired. If you are playing in tournaments, you stand a far better chance in a playoff because you are not as fatigued as you used to be.

The next thing you will notice quickly is that you are making a more complete golf backswing due to your improved flexibility. The hips rotate more freely, the shoulders move more fluidly and you have a better weight distribution on your feet. Very soon, you will begin to notice more power and speed in your entire golf swing. If you are lining up properly and executing the swing properly, your ball flight will be longer, and most likely more accurate.

Begin a workout routine slowly. Get in the habit of committing a certain amount of time per day to exercise say thirty minutes. Stick with it. Once you have developed the habit of exercising regularly, begin to increase the length of your workouts, push yourself toward greater flexibility and increase the weight you use for your weight-bearing exercises to improve strength. With regular cardiovascular exercise, you will be a better player as well as a more fit person.
