As a web developer, you have a lot of options to complete your work. You can use a program that directly creates web pages with a user friendly interface or you can create one using the Hyper Text Markup Language, commonly called as HTML.

To effectively create web pages using HTML, you have to know certain codes or commands, as others would term it. These codes are known as HTML tags. The tags work like an instruction for the browser, to read and display your webpage the way you want it to be shown. There are different types of HTML tags that are used to modify color, spacing, font, page attributes, and other various things that you want to display in your page.

HTML tags can be identified by its format, which is a lesser than () bracket. The element here serves as the command to the browser. The browser then reads the text within the brackets and does the specified command. In order for HTML tags to work, you have to remember that each tag opened has to be closed. To do this, you have to put a backslash after the lesser than bracket in the closing tag. The most common and basic HTML tags that web developers use are as follows: , , , , , , , , . With this simple format, you can already see how HTML tags work. When inputting into an HTML document, it is advisable that you use a plain text editor, such as Notepad, WordPad or Simple Text because the browser only reads text.

Learning HTML tags is a great advantage. This saves one the cost of having a web developer to make a website. You can also be creative in looking for HTML tags to use in your site. You can even pattern it against another by clicking “View” option then “Source” in the main toolbar of your browser to see the different HTML tags used in that particular website. Just make sure you do not copy the site’s content as it may be copyrighted. It is unethical and also illegal to copy web contents.

If you want to learn more about how HTML documents work and the different types of HTML tags, you can do an online search on the “how to dos”. There are a lot of websites that offer free information on this. Some will even give you a step by step tutorial in creating a basic HTML document. Other websites also feature advance HTML programming techniques that you will understand in time.

Once you are confident of your knowledge in HTML programming, you may give it a try. Remember, HTML programming requires a lot of patience and keenness in details. If it does not work the first time, don’t fret. It may just be a missing closing tag or as simple as a missing backslash in your closing tag that’s causing it not to display.
