The Basics Of Professional Teeth Whitening Procedures

By:

Many people are unhappy with the color of their teeth. Whether the discoloration is the result of drinking coffee, smoking or simply from the passage of time, professional teeth whitening may be able to help.

Unlike over the counter teeth whitening options, your dentist can offer whitening options that will work much more quickly and effectively that those that you buy at the drug store.

Take Home Trays
One option for professional teeth whitening is the use of take home trays. Your dentist would provide you with custom fitted trays, made especially for your mouth, and a whitening solution. Once or twice per day, you will apply the solution to the trays and wear them for the prescribed length of time, usually about 30 minutes.

While similar products are available over the counter, you will not achieve the same results because the trays will not be a custom fit and the whitening solution will not be prescription strength.

In Office Whitening
Another option is in-office whitening. The dentist will place a peroxide solution on your teeth and then a light is used to activate the gel. This allows for rapid teeth whitening, with some patients achieving results of up to 10 shades whiter teeth in just one treatment.

The dentist is normally going to recommend that if you are smoker that you quit. If not, any results that you achieve through professional teeth whitening will quickly be undone by the smoking. Also, he will likely recommend that you use a straw to consume certain drinks, such as coffee and soft drinks. The will help the results last as long as possible.

You will need to have good dental health in order to undergo professional whitening. If you do not, you may have to undergo some corrective procedures, such as having fillings put in or having your teeth cleaned, prior to having any professional teeth whitening treatments.

It is important to keep in mind that whitening will not work on gray stains, such as those caused by certain medications. Also, the whitening procedures will only whiten natural teeth. They will not whiten bonding material or replacement teeth.
