The Art Of Choosing The Right Necktie

By:

A necktie should always be tied so the tip of the tie is near the center of you belt buckle. If you rarely wear a belt, then your tie should come down just past your belly button. There are ties available for men of all heights, but you might have to do a little searching to find the right sizes.

If you are shorter than 5 feet 3 inches or taller than 6 feet 2 inches, you may be surprised to learn that you are most likely wearing the wrong size necktie. If you are shorter than the average guy, you will probably need a good tailor to make alterations to your ties. Tall guys can usually just buy an extra long tie in a mens wear shop.

Different Strokes for Different Folks
Taller men should look for ties that measure 61 to 63 inches long, as opposed to an average tie at 56 to 58 inches long. If you like to use larger knots like the Full Windsor for your ties, you will need an extra long tie, regardless of your height. Men who are overweight or have large neck circumferences will also need a longer tie to get the appropriate fit. Measure your neck circumference and add that number with your height in inches. If the total is more than ninety-three inches, then you will need to invest in a longer tie.

There are neckties available for kids too. These are often about 47 inches in length, and around 2.5 inches wide. These will fit kids between 4 feet, 7 inches and 5 feet 3, three inches. If you have a tall child, feel free to put him in an adult tie, however, for shorter or younger kids, a visit to a tailor or seamstress might be in order to adjust the length of the tie to fit.

A Necktie for Every Occasion
Neckties are appropriate for many occasions, from a wedding, to work, to a party. Every man should have a good assortment of colors to choose from, and should have ties that fit well. A few fun ties arent out of the question either, though they are best worn to parties or casual social events. Look for ties in a fabric that is complimentary to your suits. Dont mix silk ties with casual wool blazers.

Above all, try on a tie before you buy it to make sure it was cut correctly. Try on the tie with a suit shirt and make sure you create a knot that is similar to what you will typically wear. Ask a sales associate to help evaluate the length to make sure it falls in the appropriate place on your waistline.
