The Art Form Of Public Speaking

When it comes to things that people typically like to avoid, speaking in public has got to be somewhere near the very top of the list. Some people prefer not to fly when it comes to picking a certain type of career, while others avoid jobs where they will be isolated from the outside world, but when it comes to job positions that entail a ton of public speaking, they are typically avoided by most people who are not extremely charismatic or big-headed.

The fact of the matter is that even when corporations manage to locate and interview candidates who are willing to speak in front of large audiences, they come face to face with an even more discouraging realization that finding people who are actually good at public speaking is just as difficult as finding candidates who are not afraid of public speaking!

Now, I am by no means claiming to be the world's best public speaker, but what I do know is that the worst speeches and presentations are typically ones that sound overly used, ill-prepared, or based more on emotion than facts.

In fact, at a number of the meeting I have been in, the speech given typically sounds like it was whipped together in the backseat of an airport limo on the way to the airport, rehearsed once in the bathroom and on the other end of the flight in the backseat of a different limo service's vehicle, and then given to me with enough excitement to make it feel as though we could have taken it seriously if it had more facts, more meat, and came out more smoothly.

There is simply no way to replace practice. It really does not matter how skilled you are, or how much you know about the topic, practice will always deliver a better product.

Truthfully, if schools were more inclined to offer speaking and public presentation classes to people before suddenly thrusting it on us once in college, more people would be comfortable with it, because this is simply an industry built on practice. As a person practices, they uncover weaknesses, they focus on them, and they become strong. It is common knowledge and basic business know-how and focusing on the basics will almost always lead to an honest victory.

It takes more than just a person who likes hearing the sound of their own voice, it takes somebody who truly wants to paint a picture of thoughts, facts, and passion onto the minds of others. More often than not, somebody who lacks these skills but is still in the industry of public speaking would be more than pleased to give a speech to an empty room, whereas a true master would prefer the ability to pass his message to the masses, whether they agree or disagree.
