The Alcoholism Epidemic In Our Society

By:

Alcoholism is a disease that plagues America. Many times adults are able to sit down and enjoy a drink to help them relax a bit. For others, addiction to alcohol is a dreadful part of their everyday life. Not only is their own quality of life threatened but everyone close to them is at risk, as well.

Alcoholics are plagued by the inability to hold a regular job, prone to accidents, be a good parent and are likely to be violent. Abuse of alcohol for a long period of time leads to dire health consequences such as liver disease or death.

An alcoholic might not even realize he or she has a problem. Therefore, many alcoholics never seek treatment or stop drinking. There are many good ways to treat alcoholism if they decide to take that route.

A doctor has many questions to ask in order to determine whether somebody is suffering from alcohol addiction. The question's will be centered around how often you drink, how much you drink and whether you can stop drinking using your own willpower. The doctor will also check to see if any permanent damage has been done as a result of drinking.

If you have a strong need to drink, increased tolerance of alcohol, drink despite negative effects it has on you or have withdrawal symptoms (nausea, anxiety, etc.) then there is a good chance that you are an alcoholic.

There are many causes of alcoholism. Alcoholism tends to run in families. So, a person's genetics might be a factor. Certain personality types are more prone to being alcoholic. Someone with an addictive personality is much more likely to become addicted to alcohol. A person who is dealing with certain psychological problems are candidates to become alcoholic.

These include but are not limited to: Stress, depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress syndrome. It is no wonder people drink a lot in America. Alcohol is associated with good times and partying. The media helps to encourage the use of alcohol and should take part of the blame for creating alcoholics. If somebody in your home drinks then you are more likely to drink because you will learn poor problem solving skills.

Alcoholism can start at any age but normally begins between the ages of eighteen and twenty nine. Three times more men suffer with alcoholism than women. Alcohol abuse is often experienced by people who suffer from depression, schizophrenia, drug abuse or eating disorders.
