The Advantages of Working as a Freelancer

By: Michael G. Schurmann

Freelancing has been a vital part of the world’s labor force all through history, with indications dating back to military freelancer guerillas at the beginning of the 19th century. One of the first recognized freelancers was Ludwig Van Beethoven, the noted musician. In modern times, working as a freelancer is becoming increasingly appealing. As of now, there are over 10 million freelancers and independent contractors in the US alone . Coupled with the unbelievably fast growth in the ecommerce industry and the internet as a source of news and information, that number consistently grows.

Freelancing jobs are attractive to all sorts of different people, including work at home parents, retirees, and those interested in making extra money. With continuous changes in the labor pool, more companies make the economical decision to downsize their employment needs, even more individuals are joining the ranks of freelancers. Recently, companies have multiplied the number of projects contracted out to freelancers and outside companies by almost 25, making freelancing a much more rewarding type of employment.

There are many different types of freelance work available, including home improvement services, consulting agencies, and even the military, but the most common freelancing jobs are found in the fields of journalism, computer programming, and graphic design. A number of today’s freelance contractors have the convenience of working from home on their computer , often working for a variety of employers from all over the world.

Working as a freelancer is not for all types of people, but those interested in a way to balance their profession with their family life often discover that the advantages of working as a freelancer overshadow the drawbacks. Freelance work is sometimes a rather unpredictable form of employment, especially in the beginning, so it is difficult for a number of individuals to make the change of being employed by someone else to being their own boss. Those working freelance must search for jobs, oversee their own accounts, handle any legal matters, and prepare and pay their own taxes, or they must employ the services of another to manage these tasks which can add up to quite an expense. Plans typically provided by traditional employment, like health insurance and retirement funds, must be obtained by those working freelance as well.

Although these disadvantages generate several obstacles, the convenience of making your own schedule and working on your own time is motivation to triumph over them. Freelancers are free to work their own hours, allowing them to be with their loved ones and direct their attention to other obligations. Freelance work also offers constant change. Freelancers can work on a variety of projects for many different patrons, selecting the jobs they prefer. Many companies even regularly hire freelance contractors on a permanent basis, sometimes with benefits, especially in the field of freelance writing. For many people, working as a freelancer is an enjoyable, convenient, and moneymaking career.
