The main advantage of a Voip ASDL phone (voice over internet protocol) is a cheaper bill and in some cases, at the price of free. Although it is not exactly replacing the conventional telephone, this method of communication is rapidly increasing in popularity in the world. The user is not limited to the area of calling as well.

Important equipments to have are a computer with an internet connection. Of course, the computer is installed with the relevant software that enables Voip communication. This technology involves the transfer of data through uploading and downloading. This technology allows you to speak to people in real-time over an ADSL or internet connection.

It is necessary for the caller to have the software installed in order to utilize this technology but not so for the recipient. This is because you can use Voip to call another computer, land-line telephone or a cell phone. However, it is usually free if you call on another computer but not so if you are calling to a land-line or a cell phone. The recipient needs to have the appropriate software installed in his computer if he is to answer your call via his computer. Calling to a device other than the computer may not be free but the costs are much lower than if you are using the conventional telephone.

Of course, calling on the computer means you need to have a microphone (for which you to speak into) and speakers or a head-set (for which you to listen). The same requirements go for the recipient of your call on his computer. These simple equipments are available inexpensively for which you can purchase online or off. You may want to spend a little more for a better quality.

In some cases, it is possible to use the regular telephone instead of a head-set to call or answer a call. This may be preferable to a lot of people but the availability of this facility depends on the company which services you are using.

The software itself is usually free to download. You typically pay as you purchase credit to make calls to landlines and cell phones. In other words, you pay as you go.

The only disadvantage may be that Voip ADSL phone does not work in the event of a black-out (although there are regular telephones that do not work under the same condition). But cell phones being so common, this should not be a problem as you can rely on these.
