In almost every room in every home, there are lights with shades. It does not matter if the home has expensive or cheap ceiling lights, there is a common need to see a shade around the bulb. The reasons why a home owner may have them can vary, ranging from the aesthetic quality they can sometimes boast to their effect on the mood and atmosphere of a room. However, it can also come down to more practical reasons, like protecting ones eyes from a glare. True, saving ones eyes from a harsh light can be done by using low energy light bulbs, but such options do little to create a positive atmosphere. And though glow furniture can play some part in adding a certain fun character to a room, such additions can seem more of an intrigue rather than anything else. There are several advantage to using shades on lights, though perhaps the greatest of them is also the most obvious, namely that a shade can reduce the strength of a very bright light. More often than not, a naked light bulb is too strong to look directly at and can also be very distracting to the occupants of a room. Indeed, a naked bulb alone does not actually have any great mood building quality, and so dressing it up with a shade becomes a necessity. However, another advantage to using a light shade is that it can very effectively direct light in a certain direction. The most obvious example of this is that of the common reading lamp, where the lamps sits on a desk in a study, and deflects the light downwards. And with the light concentrated in this way, it can easily accommodate sight reliant activities such as reading. Amongst the most popular types of shades for home owners are those made of paper, plastic, silk and glass, while the cylinder shade providing more than just a way to ease the glare. Paper shades are hugely popular in modern bedrooms, with the lightness of material allowing for proportionally larger than usual shades and highly imaginative shapes. Perhaps the most common is the giant globe, which can stretch as much as 30cms in diameter, however, diamond, cube, box, and even wavy box shapes are also available. Of course, it is highly recommended that cool energy saving bulbs or led lights be used with them. This is to prevent any heat from a bulb causing the paper to ignite. Plastic shades are equally popular amongst young people, as much for their low cost as for their durability and imaginative designs. Plastic can be molded into whatever shape a manufacturer desires, and so any number of styles are available. However, unlike paper shades, there is no fear over the effects of heat as the plastic is generally resistant to high temperatures. Silk shades provide a classic feel to a room. While the light trough paper and plastic are adequately softened, silk adds a certain smoothness to the light glow. The choice of colour can make a huge difference to the ambiance in a room, while the defining feature is the tassels that typically hang from the shade end. Amongst the most desired shades on lights over a kitchen table or on table lamps in a study, are glass shades. Understandably, glass is more expensive than paper, plastic and even silk, but it lends a very distinctive quality, not only to the light but to the room itself. Glass can be bell shaped or globe shaped, while the glass itself can be frosted or coloured, while stained glass shades are hugely impressive. Meanwhile, cylinder shades are hugely popular in rooms of a contemporary design. Their shape is simple and clearly defined, though they can be embellished with a variety of patterns and themes, allowing light shaped as moons, stars and other items to be projected onto surrounding walls. Such imagery keeps children entertained, especially as they are trying to get to sleep. They are certainly much more defective that

cheap ceiling lights to get them. High quality shades are available at very affordable prices.
