The 2 spinner debate

By: marcashton

Virender Sehwag made merry as he lashed the SA bowlers to all corners of the park. Armchair critics have come out saying that the South African cricket team should be fielding two spinners to provide some additional variety to the attack.

This is all good and well that we need variety in the attack but if one spinner couldn’t make a break on one side then how in the world would a dual spin attack have made a difference?

I’m a big believer that you go with the best bowlers in your arsenal. If your strength is in a pace attack, then you need to stick with it. An average bowler replacing a world class bowler for the sake of variety doesn’t sit well with me. The argument is that Robin Pietersen should have gotten a look in as the second spinner because of the nature of the track that they are playing on. Right….

Paul Harris is a world class spinner – but can you tell me that you would replace any of Morkel, Steyn or Ntini with Robin Pietersen? I don’t believe that Pietersen is a particularly attacking spinner and whether he would have provided any real difference to the attack is very much in debate. If Pietersen was a Singh, Warne or Kumble the argument is very different but I strongly believe that you play your best players.

The reality is that there was very little that any bowler could have done in these circumstances. The batters just got stuck in and they went ballistic – it happens in cricket and when the pitch plays the game it’s a long day for bowlers and fielders who just chase leather.

Sorry cricket fans – you play your best bowlers. The attack does lack variety but it has to be quality variety. A Langeveldt there with his swing might have made a difference. A line and length bowler like Pollock could have tied up an end and built some pressure. We don’t have either of them – our best bowlers were on display and if their best wasn’t good enough on the day – they will learn for the next time.
