The 1998 Dodge Ram

By:

The 1998 Dodge Ram is one of the most easily identifiable full size pickup trucks ever manufactured. From its horse collar grill to the perfectly rounded sides that run into it, the front end of a Ram is very aggressive in appearance. The entire body and power train systems were redesigned in 1994 and the '98 models are very similar to that new style. On the inside a few different features have been changed making these models slightly more comfortable for drivers and passengers. Under the hood the trucks remain rather similar to recent previous model years.

Engines available include a 3.7 liter V6, 4.7 liter V8 and a 5.7 liter V8. Basic work trucks that are only 2 wheel drive are equipped with the smaller V6 engine. For highway situations where owners are not hauling extreme loads this smaller engine is adequate, but those looking for a better all around experience will certainly do better with one of the V8 engines. To get the most out of the rugged frame offered by Dodge, the V8 engines are the only option to utilize the truck to its full capabilities. Most mid level models with 4 wheel drive have the smaller V8, while the high-end Laramie, Sport, and Off-road package come with the 5.7 liter engine as standard.

Trim packages available include the SL, SLT, Laramie, Sport, and Off-road. SL models are basic work trucks that don't come with a lot in terms of interior amenities. Most SL trucks have no power windows or locks, no AC, basic stereo systems, and manually adjustable seats. SLT models come with power windows and locks, AC, better stereo systems, more interior fabrics to select from, and a choice between 3 different cabin sizes. Laramie models are the high-end version of the truck with full power accessories, optional leather upholstery, expanded center consoles, either 2 or 4 wheel drive, CD/Cassette players, and many other optional features.

Sport and Off-road packages come with the same available features as the Laramie package. Sport models have street tuned suspension systems that are meant for optimal performance in highway situations. There gearing has also been tweaked for the best performance and they are only offered in 2 wheel drive. Off-road packages come with standard 4 wheel drive, have raised bodies, and sturdier suspension systems.

Gas mileage is an area where the Ram is behind its competitors like the Chevy Silverado, Ford F150, and Toyota Tundra. Models of the 1998 Dodge Ram equipped with the larger engine only get between 13 mpg city and 17 mpg highway, while most competitors get at least 1 mpg better in both city and highway situations. Interior comfort is possibly only on par with the most lacking of it's competition as well. Roominess on extended and quad cab models is very nice on the Ram and the truck actually has one of the roomiest cabins available for any truck in the '98 model year. Towing and hauling capabilities are also the best in class for properly equipped Ram models.

Consumers who need to haul and tow the heaviest loads possible must consider one of the Ram models. Those looking for the best fuel efficiency and don't need to constantly get the most out of their truck may do better with a competitors full size pickup model.
