Technological Advances Of The Twentieth Century

By:

We are surrounded by technology. There's no doubt about that. It's all around us. It shows up in the most remote parts of the world through the sound of a plane's engine breaking the stillness of the jungle. It's something you can't escape. But who would want to?

Technology has made life very, very convenient. We have machines that wash our dishes and our clothes, or that cook our meals and make our beds... okay so they can't make the beds, but still. Instead of traveling twenty miles in one day we can travel thousands. We used to communicate through the pony express, now we just dial a few numbers and hear the person's voice on the other end. Again, it's very, very convenient.

If one looks back a bit in history you will see that it was time for the age of information. We've had the dark ages, the renaissance, even the enlightened ages. Every new age has brought around new thoughts, new ideas, and new technology, which all helped to bring about the age of information.

At the beginning of this new era the technology seemed to trickle in. There were bright spots such as the telephone and the light bulb, both of which were invented in the 1800's, but when the 1900s hit the trickle exploded into a full-fledged torrent. Airplanes were invented. The first automobiles hit the market; motion pictures, short-wave radio, television, cameras, washing machines. The list goes on and on and on and, well you get the picture.

During this time every great new invention was loved and used, and then improved upon. The first camera was the daguerreotype which became the Polaroid, which became 35 mm, and today we have digital cameras. The television went from black and white to color, to plasma, and is now digital HD. The intellectuals of the era recognized a great product and knew how to make it better.

Because of this intellect we are now connected to the entire world through wireless internet and cell phones. If we are in California we can upload something to our cell phone, an image or a song, and send it off to our friend in Australia who will receive it within seconds.

Technology has truly grown in leaps and bounds since the beginning of the twentieth century. But it won't stop there. It will continue to advance. Maybe teleporting is in the near future? After all, scientifically it's just a matter of scrambling the molecules and putting them back together on the other end.

You never know where technology will take us. All you can do is sit back and enjoy the ride.
