By: Carolyn Anderson

Learning skills to defend yourself in times of attack is important nowadays, not only for women but for men and women who are in jobs that require them to defend themselves from time to time. Whether you are a cop, a bouncer or just an ordinary citizen who wants to protect yourself, learning some techniques for self-defense is indeed important.

Of course, you can do something to avoid being a victim. You don't have to build big muscles for long years to be able to defend yourself. One important thing about self-defense is using your smarts, that is why the learning techniques for self-defense allows you win even over bigger or stronger attackers.

Here are a few tips and techniques that can be used to help you avoid being a victim and escape harm.

- Presence of mind is an important aspect of self-defense. Panic may be the most common reaction you can have when you are being attacked, but you have to retain that presence of mind to be able to do what is needed. Of course, whatever technique you have in fighting back your attackers will not be as effective if you don't have that presence of mind intact.

- Make escape your first option. Even if you have very good skills in fighting back, one thing that you should think first is to get out of that dangerous situation. Escape should be your first option and not to fight back. If circumstances do not allow you to escape, you may want to comply at first while thinking about your escape strategy. If you are in a situation that the attacker demands your purse or your jewelry, just give it to them and try to get out of there as quick as possible. There is no material thing that is more valuable than your own life.

- Attack when they least expect it. In self-defense, it is important that if you choose to attack back, you attack when your assailants least expect it. Proper timing is essential that is why presence of mind is important. The element of surprise is also one of the techniques for self-defense that you have to keep in mind. Keeping calm during such situations would also be a big help to be able to think straight on when and how to escape from such a situation and to know how to attack back if needed.

- Know where to hit your attackers. One of the techniques for self-defense to work is learning where to hit your attackers. Even if he is bigger than you, for as long as you know where to hurt him and give you time to escape, you can actually win over him. The eyes, the neck, the knees and the groin areas are the most vulnerable parts of the human body. You can hit, kick, gouge, pull or hurt these areas to at least give you a time to escape. To help you learn more about the best ways to hurt your attacker, you can also enroll in some basic self-defense class to go into detail on how to defend yourself without going through years of martial arts training, although martial arts is also a good technique to defend and protect yourself.

- Increase your personal awareness. One of the first things that you have to keep in mind too is to be aware of your environment. If you are working on late nights or you are aware of some violence going on in the neighborhood, you have to be extra careful too and make sure you are safe in your home and you are alert always on whatever is happening around you. Being a little paranoid about safety can be a good thing though, than being caught off-guard in the end. So learn techniques for self-defense while you're at it.
