Dogs are by nature quite energetic and hyperactive, they need an outlet for all that boundless energy. So teaching your dog to play should do the trick and in the process, you may actually save your furniture from being radically altered, courtesy of your dog. There are any numbers of games that you can teach your dog to play from the usual hide and seek to tug of war. The trick lies in getting your dog to comprehend the rules of the game, so that he or she can play it the right way. Just remember, you will need to use positive reinforcement to make sure that your dog understands the rules of the game. I have managed to compile a list of dog games from a book containing the secrets of a professional dog trainer and have listed them out here for your easy reference.

1.Hide and seek Dogs are natures best trackers and as such, they are born to play this particular game to perfection. Every dog would love to play this game, as long as you are able to get the rules of the game across to your dog. The command to be used here is seek and you need to condition your dog to track you at the sound of this particular command. Once you have managed to train your dog with some of the basic commands, get him or her to seek you out. The easy way to do this is to hide yourself in a different room and call out to your dog; he will track you and when he does so, pet him and reward him with treats. Repeat the same step but start verbalizing the command seek. In time, he will seek you out effectively no matter which part of the house you hide yourself in.

2.Fetch Dogs love to play fetch but the trick lies in getting them to fetch or retrieve the object without getting distracted halfway in-between. The first few times you try out this game with your dog will be a total whitewash. So you will need to be patient and in time, he will get the rules of the game and will fetch anything you throw. Just do be careful to reward him only when he gets it correctly otherwise, you may end up giving him mixed messages.


3.Tug of war Well, this game will be tad difficult for your dog to understand but he should be able to understand the basic rules in due course. The trick lies in getting him to drop the object at the command drop it. You know how this game is played, but I am sure that you had some trouble figuring out this game in the beginning. Your dog will have the same problem, so you will need to be patient in getting him to comprehend the rules of the game. In order to start playing this game, just drag a tug toy before his nose, preferably on the floor. It will be only a matter of minutes before he grabs the toy with his mouth, let the games begin. You will need to ensure that your hands are protected, while playing this game with your dog, at least until he understands that it is not funny to bite the hand that feeds you, literally. That said, once he has the toy in his mouth, he must be made to let go at the command drop it or stop it. Once he does that, you can reward him with a doggy treat and use positive reinforcement. It will take you some time to get the basic rules across but once you have done so, you can have tons of fun with your dog.
