Tea Tree essential oil (Melaleuca Alternifolia) is derived from the foliage of a plant originally coming from Australia, and has a strong fresh odor. Captain Cook's sailors used the leaves to make tea, but the natives were well aware of it's other properties relating to good health. After 1920, these properties were investigated more and more, and tea tree oil became well known as a disinfectant. Even though rather swamped by the influx of chemical medicines, it remains a must-have for the home first aid cabinet.

This oil is effective in combating viral, bacterial and fungal type ailments, and is especially beneficial for healing ailments that involve the lungs, urinary system and in some instances, certain gynecological problems. It is also effective against parasites, such as fleas, worms and ticks. The oil is wonderful for treating fungus of the nails of the toes by direct application.

Tea Tree essential oil ( ' huile essentielle tea tree ' in French ) has antiseptic and cleansing properties which gives it the power to treat many skin problems, such as dry skin, burns, warts and stings. It can quickly clear away infections and acts to heal the skin once the problem has been eradicated. As well as repairing skin damaged by burns, the oil also gives protection from the rays of the sun.Tea Tree can be used for a mouthwash, hand cleaner or diffused into the air we breathe to ensure a clean atmosphere.

Additional lesser known effects of this important member of the essential oil family include it's calming effect, and the property of helping lucid thought. It forms the basis of a wonderful tonic for the circulatory system, and nervous or physical tiredness. When utilized to improve the circulatory system, tea tree oil is specially beneficial for varicose veins and general blood flow.

As with compounds used for the your health, care must be taken and advice taken before any medication, even by do-it-yourself remedy. Even though Tea Tree can be used to treat fungus (see Toenail above), it is ordinarily applied diluted, one part to 10 parts oil of coconut. Of course, keep any kind of treatment or medicine away from the kids and old people.
