It seems much of Taylor Swifts current triple platinum album is about her past, specifically, her love life. This is certainly true about her latest single, the fourth from Speak Now, Story of Us. She talked up the single to MTV, the very same network that is premiering the music video for the album.
Taylor Swift told Sway told Sway that the song was inspired by an incident at an award show in which she and her former beau were sitting in the audience playing the game who can care less. This is rumored to be Joe Jonas. Reportedly, both parties, Joe or not, acknowledged the insanity of the awkwardness, but that is the nature of things when a rift decimates a personal relationship.
While that may not be the most interesting insight, it is true and that truth is why the song is going to creep up the charts and post a better position than number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 once the video premieres and is played a million times on YouTube, is linked to a couple million times on Twitter, and is posted a few thousand times on fan blogs.
What may be more interesting is that the song allowed the country starlet to talk about her process: sitting in her bedroom writing about her life and all the emotions those moments drudge up to the forefront.
I expect her to take the opportunity to talk about this more than a few times while she is on her Speak Now World Tour. She does not put on a big Broadway show with uber-saturated sets and clothing testing the limits of good taste (not that there is anything wrong with this, it is just not her style). She is a modern classic. Her concerts are pretty simple and straight forward, which is something that works for a particular brand of pop country that replaces the pickup trucks, divorce and dogs with the trials and tribulations of dating as a young woman.
The 2011
Speak Now World Tour will pick up its North American leg May 21, 2011, a day before the music video airs on MTV.
