Tanning Bulbs For Every Skin Type

By:

You probably are already aware of the importance of having quality bulbs in your tanning beds. In fact, the quality of your tanning bed can impact the cost because some produce more longer-lasting tans than others. Additionally, the quality of the bulbs themselves can impact the tan as well. But why? How do bulbs work? Is there a better bulb based on your particular skin type? Keep reading to determine what bulb will work best for you.

Simply put, tanning bulbs give you a tan just like the sun. Although the bulbs make the same kind of light found in fluorescent light bulbs, it is altered as it leaves the bulb through different ways. These methods produce ultraviolet light A and B (UV-A and UV-B for short) that tan your skin.

Each tanning bulb can produce differing results. For example, certain bulbs are made for people with darker skin and therefore give off higher UV-B intensity. There are also bulbs designed for those with fair skin. To determine which is best for you, determine your skin type and look at the various options your selected tanning bed provides.

The majority of tanning bulbs fall into two main categories low pressure and high pressure. Within the tanning industry, low pressure bulbs are typically referred to as lamps while high pressure ones are referred to as bulbs.

High pressure bulbs are typically equipped with 250 to 2,000 watt ballasts are usually three to five inches in length. They are often used in the face area of a tanning bed. They are made from quartz glass and often come with a filtering coating specially made to reduce deadly UV-C rays.

While low pressure lamps are much like plain fluorescent lighting, they filter out UV-C rays. They last anywhere from 600 to 1,600 hours. The average lamp lasts approximately 1,000 total hours.
