Tanning Beds: How Safe Are They?

Tanning Beds: How Safe Are They?

By:

No doubt about it but that public information about tanning beds can be more than a bit convoluted, depending on who you're getting your information from. Talk to one self-professed expert on the topic, and he or she will advise you that there is more than one substantial risk. Then go and ask yet another know-it-all and they'll inform you that the risk factor is minimal to none.

After all we have been hearing for years now that exposure to the sun and now tanning lights can lead to skin cancer. Then there are some people now who say that the lights on beds can even penetrate beneath your skin, and damage internal organs. So then what are the facts? The simple fact is that yes, "over exposure" to the sun and/or tanning lights is not a good thing. But the sun in particular is hard to avoid.

Then what about the risk of internal organ damage? The simple answer to that is "no". There is no risk as long as you wear proper eye protection because that's really the only place on your body that the light can penetrate that deep. You see, Mother Nature has done a pretty good job of designing your skin because your skin does a fantastic job of blocking a lot of things out, including light waves.

Then you may have heard some talk of a risk of contacting STDs off of tanning parlor beds. Can this be possible? The fact is that this is the same type of urban myth that has circulated for years about public toilet seats. Through it all though, "not one documented case" has been reported. So "no", this is not something that you have to concern yourself with.

The fact is that the germs that cause STDs die almost immediately once they're outside of the body. Just like so many other living things on the planet, they need a "warm and wet" environment to survive. Just the same though, you can always make a point of asking about salon beds cleaning policies, and also another idea is to bring some disinfectant wipes along with you in your bag to quickly wipe the bed down with.

So in the end, the bottom line is that indoor tanning, just like so many other things in your life, is really as risky as you make it. For sure your skin tone does factor in, with light skin being at a higher risk. Other than that though, you have control over so many of the risk factors that you may have heard about. Now "over tanning", whether it be indoors or outdoors definitely kicks up the risk level, and is something that really should be avoided.
