Tanglin is unquestionably one of the most prestigious districts in Singapore, while simultaneously being an idyllic neighbourhood lush with greenery. During the 17th century Tanglin consisted of nutmeg, pepper and gambier plantations. Not to be missed is the Tanglin Shopping Centre which has the distinction of being the most ancient shopping venue in Singapore. This is the location of choice for the antique lover, with exquisite art pieces, notably from the feudal period of China. Items from the renowned Middle Kingdom are available here, including Ming vases, rosewood furniture and Buddhist statues. Tudor Court is a unique shopping centre resembling a chateau from the Renaissance period which specializes in quality furniture and expensive antiques.
Visitors should make it a point to explore the renowned Singapore Botanic Gardens which was established by the founder of Singapore, and botanist, Sir Stamford Raffles. This famed garden was established in 1859, and has developed extensively since then. Visitors will see thousands of plant varieties, with the parks showpiece being the acclaimed orchid garden. You will also see a pavilion, or gazebo, where musical presentations were often conducted in the 1930s. Even today, numerous musical concerts are held at the Botanic Gardens.
