Taking Care Not To Overheat During The Summer

By:

Summertime outdoor activities are fun anytime. This is usually the ideal time for family and friends to gather and enjoy such traditions as backyard barbeques and enjoying water romps, but there is a serious side to this outdoor fun and some of your loved ones might be at great risk.

Regardless of all the fun everyone is enjoying during the last few weeks of summer, it is very important to remember that activities during the middle of the day when the sun is strong and relentless and the temperatures are soaring can really be dangerous. Too often people totally rely on their sunscreen for complete sun protection and while this might be partly true, there are other health issues associated with spending time outdoors during midday.

With the increased number of flavored drinks being available, water is becoming less of a drink that is enjoyed outdoors and these drinks can actually cause dehydration to become worse than it is. In fact these drinks are probably the last thing you would want to try to keep hydrated with. Some of these better known drinks include, but certainly not limited to this list include soda, coffee, tea and energy drinks. These drinks should only be consumed as secondary drinks and water being the primary drink to help keep everyone hydrated. There is no substitute for water as part of your keeping healthy plan.

Other problems that you should be concerned with when outdoors and especially with your friends and when alcohol is involved is overheating. If this happens it is very very important to bring down the body temperature very quickly to avoid a crisis. Submerging the body in cold water will help do this and a shower or dip in a pool or a body of water will also help. Using ice or cold beverages will speed up the cooling process. Many public events have a cool down tent especially during hot summer months along with shady areas, fans and a cooling mist all of which will control overheating before a serious health problem develops.

As the host or hostess of a gathering it is a good idea to make the start and end times a little later in the day to avoid the heat that the middle of the day can bring and the problems associated with it. Of course, it is best to make sure that you also keep a good eye on your guests watching for those who might be turning red from the sun's rays or may be sweating profusely indicating an overheating situation. Having fun with family and friends means more than just living it up it also means keeping an eye on everyone and making sure they are staying well throughout the event.
