Take The Mystery Out Of Ring Sizing

By:

A ring is a symbol of love, wealth, power and position. Finding the right ring is a very important decision for a man or woman. As gifts go, rings are one of the most influential gifts of a lifetime, offering a solid committment to love. Key elements of giving a ring successfully is choosing the right style, color and size. Fortunately, size has become less of a problem. It used to be that the wrong size was a deal killer. The ring would have to go back and another chosen. Today, ring sizing has been made more accessible and is often included in the price of the ring.

The first thing to know is how to measure the right size. Most jewelry stores have tools for ring sizing, called sizers. Some are made from plastic rings that you place on your finger to gauge the correct fit. This is a perfect tool if you don't have any other rings to judge size from. However, if do you have a ring to use as an example but don't know the size, you can search online for printable sizers. After printing you would place one of your rings on the sketch to measure the right size.

Let's say you know the size you need but the ring you have is too small. If you purchased the ring from a jewelery store, check with them to see if they offer ring sizing as part of the purchase or if there is a fee involved. If you purchased your ring online or through another source that wouldn't have access to resizing, call local jewelry stores in your area and price the resizing. Make sure you are able to tell them the current ring size and whether or not you want it enlarged or made smaller and by approximately how many sizes.

It is also important to let the jeweler know the type of metal the ring contains. This is important because the process of ring sizing involves cutting a piece of the ring and either removing a section or adding another section of the same type of metal. Typically, the exact metal is not used, the "plug" of metal is a mixture of different alloys with a different melting temperature of the original ring makeup. The metal is heated and then "sized" on a mandrel, which indicates different ring sizes. The ring is worked until the proper size is achieved and the ring is then filed and buffed so that the plug is no longer noticable.
