There are a lot of interesting facts and culture in Greece on the individual islands and on the mainland and when you delve deeper into these places you find them truly fascinating. If you are a fan of Greece and its islands and are interested in seeing the sights and discovering the history and culture you can visit anywhere here. The area that has inspired me most is the island of Lesvos with the amount of sights to visit when you are there.
Lesvos has many beaches on the island and many of them provide an excellent selection of water sports. It is the third largest island of Greece and you will be spoilt for choice with the amount of beautiful beaches to choose from. Lesvos is located in the corner of the North East of the Aegean Sea and has the temperatures of a typical Mediterranean country offering hot summers and warm winters. The rainfall in the winter has made the island rich in olive and other fruit trees with them covering over forty per cent of the island and the island also has an unexpected wealth of flora and fauna to discover. Lesvos has not been affected by the tourists that visit here and still provides the true, traditional lifestyle of Greek people.
There are many historical sights to visit on the island offering anything from the amazing and ancient architecture of buildings and ruins and also the more modern historical sights such as some of the monasteries and monuments. There is something for every type of holiday maker here on the island of Lesvos and offers anything from water sports to the history and ruins of the island.
The natural hot springs in Lesvos is the most inspiring part of the trip to the island and they are located all around the island. They are used and recommended for people who are suffering from medical conditions such as arthritis, liver disease, paralysis, circulatory problems, gynaecological problems and skin problems to name just a few, and they are renowned for their healing powers. The one natural spring that stands out on the island and is a definite must see on the island is Polychnitou. This is located on the west of the island of Lesvos. It is set at over sixty metres above sea level and is famously known for being the hottest natural spring in all of Europe. It has five springs but only three are in use with the public being able to use them too.
Facilities here have recently been enhanced to offer an improved facility for the public to shower and change. The most ancient and historical of all is Skala Thermi which was built in the Roman period. Located on the North East of the Island of Lesvos it has been in use since the earliest part of Roman times. Artemis, the Roman Goddess of the protection of thermal springs was once worshipped here in them times. The baths are now closed to the public to use to preserve the ancient relic of the springs but have built some more modern ones to be used, however the ancient baths of Skala Thermi are definitely worth a visit to explore the pure history that you will be presented with. If you are making a day of it here at the natural spring you might want to know that there are plenty of cafes that line the waterfront and on top of that you will come across two very reasonably prices fish restaurants serving amazing dishes.
Cheap holidays to Lesvos are available to book in the summer season which is generally between the months of May and October with most UK tour operators. It is well worth a trip here for any type of holiday maker as there is something for everyone and you definitely wont be disappointed.
