Tailor Bunion Foot Problem

By:

If you are suffering from pain in the ball of your foot or around your little toe, you could well have a tailor bunion or bunionette. A tailor bunion is a painful foot condition which appears on the outside of the foot on the joint where the toe meets the foot.

The symptoms of a tailor bunion include the formation of a bony lump on the side of the foot, located at the joint of the toe and the metatarsal of the foot. However this alone does not confirm a diagnosis. A lump in this location could also be a spur or a genetic bone defect.

Usually a tailor bunion will be swollen and inflamed. As the bony lump forms, the flesh is moved and can become damaged. They are easily knocked by accident and when walking normally they can rub up against the upper of the shoe and become sore. Blisters can easily form which are prone to infection.

There is often associated pain, and a tailor bunion can have a dull ache or more chronic pain. When pain becomes intense it can be necessary to have to undergo a bunionectomy, or surgical tailor bunion removal. This is best avoided in all but the most serious of cases. Sometimes the pain may not be isolated to the small toe, and may radiate outwards to the rest of the foot.

As a tailor bunion develops, the toe mores towards the others and starts to point inwards. As this happens, the bony lump at the head of the metatarsal bone protrudes outwards even further, exacerbating the problem.

A tailor bunion can be easily treated once diagnosed. They are easy to spot and can therefore be caught early in formation before the problem becomes too acute. Pain can be reduced with over the counter painkillers such as Asprin and Paracetamol. Inflammation can be reduced with Ibuprofen and any infection can benefit from antiseptic cream. Consult your pharmacist before combining drugs and check for their recommendations.

If you think that you may have a toe bunion it is wise to seek a professional medical opinion in order to determine the best course of action and to determine the extent of the problem. In many cases wearing a bunion night splint at night will help to straighten the toe. Toe stretchers can be used to exercise the toes and make them supple. Using a toe straightener in the shoe can be useful in mild cases too.

The best footwear to choose is a purpose designed bunion shoe, or even Crocs. When used with an orthotic sole for additional support, the problem can be eased and deterioration of the condition prevented. With the range of treatment options available a toe bunion need not be a major worry and healthy feet could be just around the corner
