When one thinks of Azerbaijan, ones mind automatically drifts to Antique Tabriz rugs. These rugs were made in Tabriz, the capital of the Northwestern province of this tiny country, which has, for long been the centre or the culture capital of Persia. Shah Abbas, the Great, the ruler under whom Persian art and culture flourished like never before was a great patron of weaving and Tabriz rugs were all the rage during his time.

History

During the reign of Shah Abbas and under his patronage, the weavers of the court of Tabriz were greatly encouraged and their skills were nurtured. The town of Tabriz slowly moved from prosperity to poverty and the legendary weavers of the region were no longer encouraged, on the other hand, life, for them became a daily struggle.

But, later in the same century, under the rule of the Qajars (from 1786-1925), they flourished again. Slowly and gradually, the artists of the region developed their skill, until, the 1880s saw a second golden era of Tabriz carpet weaving. This time around, the Tabriz rugs fashioned in the area were produced mainly for export to Western countries. Antique Tabriz carpets and rugs from this era are illustrated with beautiful images of hunting, flowers, medallions and gardens. Prayer rugs and pictorial rugs are also quite a few in number.

Colors and Designs

Antique Tabriz rugs from Persia are quite regal in their appearance. The color palette features mainly copper tones, ivory and terracotta. These are combined with blues, delicate salmon, vibrant greens and golds to complete the regal aura. Rugs woven later on also feature red, gold, green and blue. These colors were toned down because most Tabriz rugs woven later on depicted gardens and floral settings.
