Tableware; Evolving To Meet The Needs Of Consumers

By:

The correct choice of tableware can do much to set off dinner parties and create elegant dining. However with choices on the market in abundance, consumers are left with a myriad of options when it comes to tableware. Ultimately by considering your own needs and requirements combined with your own stylistic preferences the correct choice can be made. It is the hope of this article to clarify somewhat the choice of tableware, providing a brief overview of how dining behaviours are changing and how this is altering the style and design of dinnerware.

The right tableware set is multifunctional, that is to say that it should be able to perform in both informal and formal situations. Within the dinnerware industry 'informal dining' is the current buzzword; attitudes towards dining are changing, with a growth in grazing menus rather than sit down meals. This type of dining is considered by many to be far more social, where the food becomes a focal point and all the diners can share thoughts about the different foods on offer. Due to this change in dining, tableware sets are now increasingly incorporating large dishes and platters into sets.

Even with the growth in informal grazing however the majority of dinnerware sets need to perform in formal situations as well. Formal dining is not yet dead and many people still choose to sit around the table having a meal of various courses, conversing about the politics of the day, recent sporting events and life in general. This is why when choosing a tableware set it is important to select one that contains enough items to cope with numerous courses, side dishes and in some cases glasses for different wines.

Tableware companies are now hiring interior designers in order to give their sets added panache and elegance. Increasingly using different shapes in design is common. Square and triangular shaped plates and bowls are becoming popular, helping to frame the food being served. It seems that circular plates are now passe, consumers have a desire to replicate what they have seen in restaurants and on television and want to professionally present their meals, even if they do not taste as good.

A variety of materials are also now being used in the manufacture of tableware. In the past china and porcelain were the mainstays of the industry, today increasingly diverse material choices are being used with aluminium, plastic and even glass becoming popular. Even so, these new materials have not yet replaced ceramics as the primary material within the industry.

It is hoped that this article has presented some of the ways in which tableware is changing to meet the attitudes and tastes of consumers. As people increasingly want to present their food in a professional manner; enhancing their dinner parties, manufacturers have had to match these desires with a range of products that provide individual style and elegance.
