While Philippines has had its share of tragedies in volcanic eruptions, one massive eruption that occurred almost 500,000 years ago has left its mark in an amazing geographical creation that has become a major tourist magnet over the years.
Lake Taal which is found in Luzon Island in Philippines is situated within the caldera formed from that major eruption; it has the volcano island in the centre of the lake while the island itself holds a crater lake. It is perhaps no surprise that the latter lake is the largest of its kind.
Needless to say, this confounding but unique sight is visited and revisited by tourists who have to take a wooden boat ride for 45 minutes to reach the island. Arrive at the island and proceed to the next exciting part of the journey by reaching the crater top on horseback. A few brave ones can attempt at least part of the journey on foot.
The crater top is termed the Tagatay ridge and a part of the opposite end is formed from the Mt. Makylot which offers a prospect of great trekking for the adventurous. Lake Taal, as the countrys third largest lake holds many mysterious treasures within its depth. One of them is the sulphuric content that is supposed to be in a healthy concentration, thus promoting people to swim or even go diving in it. As a fresh water lake, it has also had its share of fishing done on it although with mixed results and reports. One of fifteen of the decades volcanoes, the Taal volcano has its place in historic as well as scientific significance.
