T-shirts Role In Mens Fashion

By:

There is nothing more iconic than a man's t-shirt. Unlike women's top underclothes (brassieres), except for maybe in the case of Madonna, men's top under garments, at least when it comes to t-shirts have long ago found their ways to express themselves uncovered. They started out as pure white. It was back in the 1950's when greasers first started wearing t-shirts as the only shirt they were wearing.

It was because of the class differences. Greasers could not afford to wear nice dress shirts to work on their cars or motorcycles, that would just get ruined. Also it became a statement of rebellion, which turned out to attract the girls. The uniform of the tough guy became the black leather jacket, with t-shirt under, blue jeans and black boots. That uniform is still as powerful today as it was the day some guy first decided to wear it, instead of a button-down dress shirt, suit jacket and dress pants.

T-shirts have since expanded to escape from pure white to embrace every color of the rainbow. They also expanded from the standard short sleeve t-shirt with a collar to include v-cut collars and tank tops and more. Tank tops became even more popular once they were adopted as surfer wear. The next thing that happened was the printing, silk screening, and iron-on decals. Now there are t-shirts that express every possible design and even companies that will create a t-shirt for you with a custom design of your very own.

This also means that men have not failed to express their stupidity in the choice of the t-shirts they wear and what they say on them. The ultimate of that might be the "I'm with Stupid" t-shirt with an arrow pointing in the direction of the person next to them. This trend of being even more stupid was enhanced by the improved "I'm with Stoopid" showing just how really stupid the person was, who bought a t-shirt where the words were misspelled.

It is supposed to be a joke, but the joke is on you if you wear it. The more rude, but in the same line of white trash fashion, is the t-shirt worn by bikers that has printed on the back "If you can read this, the bitch fell off." If we have to advise you NOT to wear those kind of t-shirts you may actually be more "S-T-O-O-P-I-D" than you think. There are also polo type shirts that are masquerading as t-shirts.

In our minds, those do not count. If it costs more than $20 for a t-shirt, except at a rock concert, it falls outside of our definition of t-shirts. What about that rock concert t-shirt? Well it is great for wearing around the house when you watch football, or for going to another rock concert.

Just don't think it is appropriate attire for thanksgiving dinner to meet your finance's folks for the first time, or that it will help you land that righteous new job, unless you are applying for a job at the motorcyle shop and you meet the owner at that same rock concert where you bought the t-shirt.
