Symptoms Of An Anxiety Attack

An anxiety attack can be a terrifying experience. An anxiety or panic attack is typified by a period of sudden and very intense fear or dread that usually lasts for no longer than 10 minutes and can come up very abruptly, for no logically apparent reasons. More often than not, panic attacks repeat themselves in most individuals, and such people are said to have a panic disorder.

The symptoms of an anxiety/panic attack will vary from person to person. There are, however, a few common symptoms displayed during most anxiety attacks:

1. Excessive sweating
2. Trembling or shaking, especially in the extremities (hands, feet)
3. Excessive palpitation; increased heart rate
4. Shortness of breath
5. Pain in the chest, discomfort while breathing.
6. Nausea
7. A sense of loss of control, or fear of losing sanity.
8. Feeling of impending doom
9. Light-headedness.


A normal, healthy person might experience any one of these conditions from time to time during routine life. If you can work out logical reasons for these conditions (stress, issues such as financial condition, an important test, a job interview, presentation, etc.), then there it does not necessarily have to be a panic attack. However, if there are no apparent reasons for the onset of any one of these conditions, you need to seek professional help; it may be a sign of a panic disorder.

If you have certain phobias, there is a good chance you'll experience any one or more of these symptoms as a natural reaction to anything that can trigger the phobia. This, again, does not have to be a sign of a panic disorder since most people are quickly relieved of the above mentioned symptoms as soon as they escape the phobia trigger.

Anxiety is a natural reaction of the body to cope with the stress arising from an unpredictable, unpleasant situation. An anxiety/panic attack, however, is a much more serious condition that can make normal life difficult for the sufferer. It is also one of the most common mental illnesses and can be very easily cured. If you suspect you suffer from any of the above symptoms for no foreseeable reasons, please do not hesitate to consult a doctor.
