Gantt chart is a graphical representation helps to plan as well as to monitor the progress of the project and it is used to plan the allocation for resources. This chart should be prepared in such a way that it is standard and easily understandable by all levels of people. There are few standard notations that must be used during the creation of this type of charts. Gantt chart symbols should also be given a great attention to design a standard and understandable chart.

There are many symbols available to be used in this chart. Each symbol is used to indicate a specific point. There are many tools accessible with the help of which we can draw this type of charts. Each of these tools has Gantt chart library which contains the symbols that are supposed to be used in the chart. These symbols refer to specific tasks, indicate deadline, show how much work is done, discrepancies, etc.

Task bar symbol is the one that is used to indicate the amount of work done by stretching it horizontally against a particular period of time. Another symbol that is commonly used in this chart is milestone symbol. This symbol is normally used to indicate any important breakthroughs that has high priority and should be immediately reported. Triangle symbols are also available that are usually used to indicate start and completion of tasks. Triangle at the start of a horizontal task bar indicates that the task has begun and during completion another inverted triangle is used at the end of the task bar to represent the end. Diamond shapes may refer to the tasks that are rescheduled.

You can also sometimes notice a vertical line that is used within a time division. This is normally used to represent the current status of the project. How far the project has progressed is indicated. Link lines are used to represent the logical connection between the tasks, like which task comes first and which one is the next. You can also use others symbols that are available in the tool you are using and define their use on your own.
