Switch Servers Without Affecting Search Engines Rankings

By:

Often times for different reasons a website owner comes to the decision to switch to a new web server. When that happens you may be concerned that this will have an adverse effect on your search engine rankings. You don't want to give up your first page ranking with your chosen keywords for your internet marketing blog just because you need to switch servers. You don't want keywords you worked so hard on disappearing because you need to switch servers. The good news is there are ways you should be able to switch web servers without hurting your SEO rankings. Here are some things to think about and ways to help you minimize the risk when switching servers.

Assuming that all other elements on your site are staying the same, domain name etc., make sure you have very little downtime on your site. The shorter the downtime your website has, the less chance your site has of losing its ranking. Even if the spiders hit your site once and notice it is missing, if you are quick, by the time they hit you again you should be back up and running. Shorter downtime ensures you experience no loss to your overall rating.

Another good strategy is to keep the files from your old website up on the original server after you move to the new website. If you can leave them up for a few days, a month at most, it can help to mitigate any damage you might otherwise see in your rankings. This isn't always going to be possible, and in some cases it will be impractical but if you can do it, it will make a difference in your rankings.

Generally speaking, you shouldn't lose rankings just by switching to a new web server. People switch servers all the time, and most report very little loss in rankings. The key is to make one change at a time. Make sure the switch isn't accompanied by a great deal of site down time. Don't try to switch servers and URLS in a single shot. If you do the resulting traffic loss might be too much to handle. Follow these tips and your internet marketing blog will not have to give up its front page ranking when switching servers. That means less time spent trying to remember key words and more time you can spend on other areas of your business.
