Sweet Georgia: Five Great Southern Films To See On Satellite Tv

By:

From the town squares of Savannah to the green rolling hills of Kentucky, the south has made a rich backdrop for some of the cinema's greatest classics. And whether it happens to be a period piece set in a more tumultuous time or a classic story of women banding together and remembering what it means to feel friendship and support, there are tons of films drenched in Southern-fried humor and emotions. While Georgia residents cannot claim all of these pictures as their state's own work, some of these are set in the land of peaches, while all reflect southern sensibilities over the ages. For those with satellite tv who want to take a peek at homegrown talent and humor, here are five great southern films worth checking out. Whether it's for the first or the fourteenth time, these classic picks are always an exciting experience.

#1 - Mississippi Burning. With excellent performances by Gene Hackman and William Defore, the world of the Civil Rights Movement is brilliantly depicted as FBI agents try to find the missing kids from the Freedom Rides. This story of the first white college students to lose their lives while fighting for equality is one that rings true regardless of time, and this is an important cinematic tribute to those who were willing to do the right thing, even at risk to one's personal safety.

#2 - Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. An excellent film adaptation of a real-life news story and its subsequent nonfiction tome, this is the story of a Savannah murder. The fact is that this was not a murder, it was the murder, as it involved a local hustler and the town's closeted but beloved antiques dealer who made his way up from nothing (the famous quote from the film? "I'm nouveau riche, but it's the riche that counts). Kevin Spacey, Jude Law, John Cusack, and plenty of other big-name stars make this a fun romp worth seeing countless times on satellite tv.

#3 - To Kill a Mockingbird. In a world of quick cuts and HDTV, a truly brilliant film that manages to capture the experience of growing up and learning how the world works is something that is often ignored. Not so with this instant classic, based on an equally stunning book. Gregory Peck plays the father that so many Americans wish that they were fortunate enough to have, and the film manages to show both good and bad sides to the American South.

#4 - Steel Magnolias. For those who are willing to cry--a whole lot. Dolly Parton acting brilliantly, a story designed to tug at heartstrings, plenty of Southern accents, fantastic performances by Julia Roberts and Sally Field make this one of the funniest movies ever until its climactic turning point. But until then, it is a wonderful comedy, and it definitely captures the southern spirit.

#5 - Driving Miss Daisy. It might not be an immediate choice for those with satellite tv, but this is the kind of story designed to get an emotional response. A classic example of filmmaking, and a slowly built narrative that deserved the accolades it earned.
