Surveyor Montgomery-how Our Country Is Divided

For all land surveyors, in Montgomery, for instance, surveying is the job of measuring large parcels of land. The Rectangular Survey System or the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) has been the system used to survey most parts of the United States. The system is set up as a grid that ultimately seeks to divide the land into square mile sections.

Some of these are prime meridians, baselines, and principal meridians. The Prime Meridian is the longitudinal (running North-South) line that is defined as 0. Starting at the North Pole, and extending along the surface of the earth in a straight line south to the South Pole, the Prime Meridian is the starting point of all surveying calculations.

The Prime Meridian starts at the North Pole and extends south to the South Pole. Baselines are lines that extend east-west. Principal meridians are the true north-south lines that run through the initial point of the area that is being covered.

These lines are the starting point for all other surveying information. From these lines, baselines are determined, and run east west, intersecting every prime meridian. The true north south lines that extend from the initial point of the section are called principle meridians. All measurement begins at the initial point. Astronomy is used to place the initial points.

Along the north-south prime meridian, initial points are marked at 24-mile intervals. Baselines extend from east to west from these points as well. Along the east-west baselines, points are marked at 24-mile intervals as beginning from the north-south prime meridian. The parallel points created from these points are called standard corners.

The places they do cross are called closing corners. Each standard then contains a set of standard corners and closing corners. Every 24-mile section is further divided into 16 townships, each at 6 x 6 miles square. Starting from the southeast corner of the 24-mile section, corners are set six miles away on the East-West parallel and the meridians.

From these corners, range lines extend north to the next parallel, and the township lines run west to the next meridian. This system is the basis that any American land surveyor, in Montgomery for instance, must learn as part of their job.
