Running may be a great exercise for the legs, which is if you are a runner. A more surf specific exercise you can do is the jump squat. What makes it a better surf fitness exercises is that it mirrors the exact position when you surf. It also adds power and balance not just leg endurance like running does. Since surfers need a strong upper body to pop up on the surfboard, doing push ups seem a good idea. But what you really need is to do is surfers pop up. It is way better than push ups because you can practice getting to your feet more often and will help you improve your transition from your chest to your feet when catching a wave.

When you are doing stomach crunches to train your core, you should also include the dumbbell wood chop. Crunches are done lying down while the dumbbell wood chop is done standing with a twisting motion. The dumbbell wood chop not only integrates the upper body and the lower body in a single movement, you also get to train your core. It also mimics the maneuver attempting to stand up on your board making it a great compliment to your stomach crunch exercise.

There are a lot of other exercises that are far more effective than the usual ones simply because they specifically target the muscles that are used when you surf. You need to recognize which exercises will bring you the results that you are looking for and those that are just a waste of your time and energy.
