They should also offer free articles in hundreds of categories. You don't want a directory that is limited in subject matter. The more categories they offer the more chances you have to submit your various types of articles.

It's also important to note the directories terms and policies. You want a directory that cares about quality and has a system for monitoring articles. If they are fully automated without human control then they probably aren't concerned with providing quality and original articles.

A friendly article directory puts an emphasis on featuring new authors and their articles. This is another great way to get some added exposure.
