If you fail to plan you plan to fail. A plan will help you avoid pitfalls like spending too much or buying the wrong items. With miniature design a plan of action will consist of a floor plan and budget. A floor plan is a drawing, picture, or print of a dollhouse room that you would like to coordinate. There are many room designs both online and off. Make sure that you are taking notes of great rooms that you see. Take these notes and modify your plan. Once you have a good idea of what you would like you will need to budget accordingly. Unfortunately for hobbyists miniatures can get a little expensive. In my opinion it is better to save up for a nice piece of furniture rather than going ahead with a cheap copy.

Putting contrast in your layout

The idea of contrast is to great stark differences between colors, furniture, textures in order to draw attention to the action. Using contrast works well to move your eye to a certain location of the room, or in a predetermined pattern. Contrasting colors are identified on a simple color wheel: They are the colors that are opposite each other. When dealing with color contrast remember that it is easy to over due it and come out cluttered. The standard is to restrain yourself to one contrast in a room, this way it doesn't get cluttered.
