Sun Exposure And Protection From It

By:

Summer is just around the corner and with that glorious season comes shorts, tank tops, flip flops... and the sun, ready to turn all that exposed skin a bright red. A little bit of sun is absolutely essential to our health and well-being, but there is a point when it becomes too much. Generally, our eyes and our skin are both affected when we overexpose ourselves to the effects of the suns rays.

It is actually recommended that we spend time in the sun for fifteen minute sessions, three times a day. The ultraviolet rays that we absorb during this time help the body produce Vitamin D. This vitamin is essential for the proper development and upkeep of bones, and will help the body absorb calcium better.

We also experience an emotional lift after spending time in the sun. This occurs because sunbeams affect the production of insulin, which is a hormone that affects a person's energy by creating it from glucose. The energy we experience helps us feel better as well as making us better able to cope with stress. Fatigue and stress are two major causes of depression.

Of course, there are more benefits from the suns rays than just these. They are an immune system booster, a fighter of heart disease, muscle pain, and arthritis, and they actually help to prevent certain types of cancer, such as leukemia. It is also believed that spending some time outdoors during the day helps a person sleep better at night by fixing your biological watch to the correct time.

Clearly going outside can boost our health, but if too much time is spent outside, the health benefits falter. The sun can help prevent some cancers, but too much of it can create others, such as skin cancer. It can also cause us to age more quickly, causing premature wrinkles and leathery skin. And, of course, looking directly at the sun can damage the retina of the eye causing vision problems.

If you are going to be spending a lot of time camping or at the beach, where there is little protection from the elements, you will want to make sure you have plenty of sunscreen, as well as a good pair of sunglasses that will protect your eyes against UV rays. Many people choose to forego this protection because they are afraid they may be mocked by their friends.

This is a worry that can be avoided. The sunscreen will disappear into your skin, and there are hundreds of styles of glasses out there, from dragon sunglasses to retro sunglasses. You can find a pair that shows your personal style and still looks great.
