Sump Pump Installation

By:

When a homeowner faces a flooded basement or crawl space, it can be one of the most dreaded problems known. Basements and crawl spaces are below ground and after a heavy rain, they may become flooded. This flooding may damage anything stored there and be quite costly. In such situations, a sump pump installation may be recommended.

A sump pump installation is a sure way to stop that flooding in your basement and the expense of the materials that may be stored there. The sump pump works to pump the water out of your basement or crawl space. Sump pumps will remove the water out and away from the foundation where it will not run back in. Even if you think your home is well sealed against flooding, water can often find a way under a door or other opening you may not be aware of.

A sump pump installation is your best way of defense when it comes to flooding of your basement or crawl space. If your house is in an area lower than the natural ground water table, a sump pump is ideal for your home.

There are two fundamental kinds of sump pumps which are: pedestal (above the sump basin) and submersible (that sits down in the sump vessel where water settles). Sump pump installation also includes such components as a plastic or metal sump basin liner, a one-third or one-half horsepower, 200W or 400W, powered by electricity, PVC discharge pipes that run from the pump to the outside of the house and a check valve that stops water from running back into the basement or crawl space when the pump is shut off. It is also proper to install a battery-operated auxiliary pump that can be started in the event a power failure occurs for any reason.

Considering having a sump pump installation, your sump pump vessel should be in the lowest place in the basement so any water will surge to that place. Use a level to check if the ground floor is sloped downward. This area should also be near an outside wall for easier placing of discharge pipes and near a GFCI electrical outlet so the pump can be easily plugged in. It is also important to check this area to see if it can conform to installation of the pump's emission pipes so they can cause the water to drain away from the foundation.

To measure out the size of the hole to be made, the sump pump basin liner is placed on the floor and marked around with a permanent marker. A rented jackhammer is then used to break up the concrete and then to make holes to break the pieces small enough to be easily picked up and disposed of. Pedestal pumps will be placed outside of the basin and submersible pumps will be placed down on the bottom of the basin directly in the middle.
