Although several runners still continue their running program during these hot weather days, they should be warned that summer running can increase their core body temperature. As a result, runners should adapt some changes in their running routine to ensure their complete safety when running on a hot weather like summer. If you want a safe summer run, below are five tips that can help you get through summer running:

1. Drink ample amount of fluids

There is a significant increase in fluid loss during summer running. Thus, you need to keep your body hydrated before, during and after running. Do not wait until your thirst mechanism signals you to drink. Preferably, you need to bring enough bottles of sports drinks or energy drinks that replenish lost electrolytes in your body. Some even drink carbohydrate protein shakes that reload your glycogen stores. Drinking plain water alone can be harmful to your body.

2. Choose to run in the morning or late in the evening

If you want to run in summer, consider running in the morning and evening rather than in the late afternoon. There is less humidity in the air during early hours of the day and late hours of the evening. At 10am to 4pm, the air quality is at its worse; thus, runners should avoid running during this period. Also, runners should choose a running location where there are several shaded areas to protect them from the heat of the sun.

3. Eye and skin protection

Too much exposure to heat can cause sunburn and damage your skin. Thus, you need to protect it with sun block lotions that contain high-level of SPF. Aside from preventing sunburn, sun blocks can keep your skin hydrated and moisturized. Summer heat can also cause glares, but this can be prevented with the use of quality glasses that contain a specific protection against harmful UV rays.

4. Wear summer running clothes and gear

It is important that you choose running clothes that are lightweight, breathable and wick away sweat and moisture. Often, running clothes made from Lycra or polypropylene is best worn in summer. Do not use clothes made from cotton material since it will only absorb moisture. On the other hand, you should also get running shoes that come with air mesh uppers and sock liners to keep your feet away from moisture.

5. Observe for signs of heat related problems

Runners are at risk for heat-related injuries when they are exposed to too much heat of the sun. Thus, runners should be more vigilant with their self. They should take note of how they feel when running on extreme temperatures. Aside from that, it is important that they read about the common manifestations of heat problems and how it can be treated.
