Succeeding in Your Home Based Business

By: James Delrojo

Home based business has many advantages but it also has some pitfalls. In order to succeed in your home based business you need to adopt some strategies to manage these pitfalls and ensure that you have a profitable business as well as a balance in your life.

Let's start by looking at some of the advantages of the home based business.

Firstly you save the travel time that others are wasting going to and from their place of work. For many people this can be a couple of hours each day, which adds up to almost 500 hours per working year.

Secondly you have a much greater degree of flexibility over your time. Most home based businesses give you the freedom to choose when you work and when you don't. If you have a family then you can be enjoying aspects of that family life that many workers completely miss out on.

These, and the many other advantages can make home based business very attractive but there are also some traps that many people fall into that result in their business failing. Let's now look at some of those and what you can do to protect yourself.

Working from home requires a lot more self discipline and organization than working outside of home. It is easy to become distracted by your normal home life and end up wasting a lot of time. This can prove disastrous to your bottom line profits.

At the opposite extreme you can be mentally at work 24 hours per day and totally lose the balance in your life. Many home business owners don't develop the habit of switching off from the work day. They keep thinking of things they should do, and because their office is at home then they do those things. The result on family life is usually less than desirable.

You can use the same strategies to handle both these extremes.

Strategy 1: Establish an area in your home that is your office.

If you establish a distinct workspace at home, preferably a separate room, then you can train yourself to "go to work" and "come home from work" by going to and leaving from that workspace. You have to be strict about this. Never do work outside of the designated workspace and never do non-work activities inside the designated workspace.

If you are strict to this then your brain will start to fall in line with this pattern and you will soon have a clear distinction between when you are working and when you are not.

It is also crucial to train other members of your household to respect this workspace. Always speak in terms of "going to work" and "coming home" so that your family accepts the concept. If you are disturbed by a family matter while you are in the workspace then say "I'm at work now. We'll deal with that when I get home." If you are strict to this yourself then the rest of the family will fall in line with it too.

Strategy 2: Establish definite work hours and stick to them.

Your work hours can be whatever works for you and for your business but they should be definite and published for the rest of the household to see. Treat these hours in the same way that you treat your workspace. Be strict and don't make exceptions. If you do this then you will get into a routine of being work centered during those designated hours and being able to put work out of your mind outside of your designated hours.

Strategy 3: Finish each day with a review of what you accomplished during the day and then write down the six most important tasks to achieve on the following day.

By reviewing the day you keep control over your level of productivity. Don't be critical during this process. Perform it in a calm, business manner, aimed at progressively improving your daily productivity. Ensure that you sort your day's achievements into what is really important for business success and what, although pressing, may not have been the best use of your time.

As soon as you have finished your review you write down the six most important tasks to achieve tomorrow. Then you finish work and put it out of your conscious mind. This review and preplanning process will ensure that your subconscious works on this while you are consciously living your personal life. You will be mentally preparing for the following day without even realizing it.

If you are new to home business, or if your home business is not functioning as you would like it, then adopt these three simple strategies and stick to them diligently. You will notice a huge improvement in both your work productivity and your life balance.

The duty cycle is usually based on stress testing that is conducted by the printer manufacturer. As each manufacturer defines "stress test" differently, each duty cycle rating tends to be different.
