Surfing has become one of the most popular water sports ever. Yes, you may not remember the times when surfing was practiced by a very limited amount of people and was highly unpopular. Anyway, it was about 50 years ago when it all changed and surfing suddenly started gaining popularity so that it reaches its present level: one of the most loved water sports ever existed.

But exactly as everything popular, surfing became commercialized. The reason is that the businesspeople always think of new ways to earn money and when they see, there is a new opportunity, they do not wait too long before they grab it. So, it is not surprising that many investors set up their own companies so that they produce surfboards and other surfing equipment. Some of those investors are the owners of the most famous surfing brands in the world.

Perhaps, most of you know which the most popular surfing brands are. Of course, they are the most expensive ones and a limited amount of people could afford them- only the richest. But there is another question on the schedule- is it worth purchasing such expensive surfing brands. Yes, they are good and you will definitely make a good impression but is that worth spending crazy money?

People who have wide experience in the area of marketing share that what people pay up to 300% more just because they want to own a product of a famous brand. Here is a simple example: a surfboard which costs $150 in the local surf-shop could cost up to $500 if it is of a particular brand.

But here comes the question: "Why is it so much more expensive"? Perhaps, most of you would say that the renowned surfing brands manufacture products and equipment of much higher quality. Well, that would be correct to some extent but the truth is that no matter what the quality of surfing equipment is, it could never cost three times more!

Do not forget- the reason is "brand reputation". That is what you actually pay so much money for! In fact, sometimes, when the brand is really famous, you actually pay much less for the product itself than for the brand's name- that is usually a sign on the product or the brand's name!

Let's take one of the many surfing brands- Fox Head Europe. They sell some of their surfboards at the rate of $400. However, it does not mean at all that they are much better than a surfboard which could be found at $100 in a regular shop. In fact, the real price of a Fox Head Europe surfboard costs around $80 or something like that. The rest of the price (320$) is the so called "price of reputation".

So, here comes the question: "Is it really necessary people spend so much money on something like reputation"? That question's answer depends on the person's own preferences- some people like showing off with the best surfing brands and others just realize that it is stupid to spend so much money just because they have needs to show off.
