Stuffed Shih Tzu & Facts

By:

Little dogs are especially popular amongst the jet-setters of Hollywood and that includes the beloved Shih Tzu. For those that cannot afford to have the real deal, a stuffed Shih Tzu pup is the next best thing.

The Shi Tzu was named after the Lion Dog - an animal featured in Chinese mythology which was revered in China. Shih Tzu's were kept as companions and watch dogs in Chinese imperial courts and were given the same respect as lions as they were highly regarded by Buddhists. The ancestors of the breed originated in Tibet and it is believed it may have been related to the Lhasa Apso. These found their way to China centuries ago, as gifts of goodwill from Chinese monasteries to the Chinese Emperors and were bred there for more than 2,000 years. Shih Tzu's in China were bred with Pekingese which is what produced the Shih Tzu breed. In the late 1930's, the Shih Tszu was introduced to Britain and was then brought to America in the late 1950's. For a brief period, it was classed with the Lhasa Apso but since receiving its recognition as a separate breed, more and more people have become aware of this very delightful dog.

Shih Tszu's are bred primarily as pets as they possess great charm and vitality. They are a gentle and loyal breed with a very lively personality that is completely devoted to their family. In fact, they thrive on human companionship from both children and adults. While they only need moderate exercise, their dense, double long coat, however, demands daily upkeep and care so as to keep its good looks. Stuffed Shih Tzu toys do not require any extensive brushing, although their coat could stand it if that's what you choose to do. Stuffed Shih Tzu puppies, on the other hand, do not have the same long hair as the adults do, thus brushing is really not a requirement.

In general, Shih Tzu's are a healthy breed and can live long-lives (up to 15 years), unlike other breeds which can often come with a host of issues as they age hip dysplasia in German Shepherds, for example. That is not to say that health problems will never exist, but they are far less likely than with other breeds. Shih Tszu's make terrific apartment dogs due to their small size and less of a need for full out exercise. While playing will take care of most of their needs, they do require a daily walk, even if it is a brief one. Typically, any dog that does not get to walk at least once a day, will likely exhibit behavior problems.

If you think the Shih Tzu is the dog for you but for any number of reasons cannot have the real thing, check out the stuffed Shih Tzu puppies in online stores. Plush pups just don't come any more adorable than the one that is 14.5 inches long.
