Stubb's Bar-b-q: Faith And Food, The Perfect Combination

By:

Sunday mornings are meant for two things: faith and food. Traditionally, churchgoers attend mass on Sunday morning, where they worship and come together as a community. Also traditionally, people everywhere enjoy Sunday breakfast or, depending on Saturday night, brunch. Eggs, pancakes, waffles, bacon, biscuits, hash browns, grits, sausage and anything else that can be added to the table is. It is a welcome change from the usual bowl of cereal, pop tart or nothing that is consumed Monday through Friday. Now, ideally, if those two things - faith and food - could be combined in some way, youd have the best Sunday of all. At least, thats what Christopher Stubbs Stubblefield thought when he started serving a Gospel Brunch every Sunday at his Austin restaurant, Stubbs Bar-B-Q.

Stubbs got its start not in Austin but in Lubbock, where Stubblefield opened his first restaurant in 1968. The place included a jukebox in the corner and later a stage where jam sessions with local bands could be regularly heard. Although popular, Stubblefield closed the restaurant down and moved to Austin. He worked at Antones, a club in downtown Austin, for one year, and in 1986 opened Stubbs Bar-B-Q in the Red River District.

Today, the Bar-B-Q is renowned for its great food and drink, as well its very own rubs and sauces, which can be purchased online for your own at-home Stubbs experience. But perhaps the most famed part of Stubbs is the Gospel Brunch, which occurs every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The weekly event involves, of course, food. Set up buffet-style, diners can sample southern-style grits, migas, fried catfish and BBQ brisket. A create your own Bloody Mary bar means that youll have the perfect drink to complement your perfect meal. While youre eating, Gospel music will be performed live. With a different group every week, you are sure to hear a great range of talented musicians.

If youre planning on going to Stubbs on an upcoming Sunday, it is recommended that you make reservations, as this is a highly popular location - how could it not be with the all that delectable food and quality music? So call ahead and book a table. It is also recommended that you come hungry. If you dont, you wont be able to try all the buffet has to offer, and that, undoubtedly, would be a sin.

The final bit of advice for Stubbs is to check out their Web site at stubbsaustin. This will give you an idea of whats in store - whos playing, what the full menu entails, etc. It will also enable you to quell your excitement for the remainder of the week, so you arent chomping at the bit, waiting for Sunday morning to roll around. And when it does finally roll around, prepare yourself for a true weekend treat. You will walk into that restaurant ready for everything and walk out with a happy stomach, happy ears and an overall happy disposition. How could you not, when one man has taken it upon himself to provide you with the perfect recipe for Sunday morning: faith and food.
