In the last few years a very old naturopathic cure has steadily been gaining scientific credibility.

Years ago I was chatting to a zoologist, as you do, and she was telling me how they fasted the animals one day a week. All of them.

Because they are sedentary?

No, she replied, animals are lazy in the wild, those lions sit under the same bloody tree all day in Africa. No.it increases their life spans by about 20% and not only that, the health and vitality of the animal improves also.

HmmmI had to know more and what Ive discovered over the last 15 years since has amazed me to the point that I look at fasting only slightly behind great nutrition as one of the most essential elements of health.

Fasting. Yeah thats right folks, fasting! No food. No juice. Nothing! Just water. Yee Gads. Get me out of here. What wacky cure is this? Well for starters its dirt cheap, costs you absolutely zero, in fact, it will save you money.

Secondly, you know all those Hollywood celebs that pay big money to have their anti-aging hormone injections? Well I dont know them either but Ive heard about them.Well fasting shoots those hormone levels through the roof.

Within 8 hours of fasting, your human growth hormone, and DHEA hormone (thats right kids, the anti-aging hormones) levels start to rise, and after 12 hours the rate of that rise increases.

This is your bodys natural defence of all your internal organs and cells. So much for eating six small meals a day. Sorry, Im not a believer. And guys, your testosterone levels start to rise too. This is one of the many benefits that the body achieves through fasting.

Another is a marked improvement in immune function, especially during the first 36 hours of a fast. During this time you will see raised levels of T-lymphocytes (the main warriors of the immune system, protects the body against anything that it views as foreign or toxic) and lymphokines (chemical mediators that enhance the immune response), increased immunoglobulin levels (antibodies activated in response to an antigen), and enhanced natural killer cell activity (unique group of defensive cells that kill cancer cells and viruses known as the pit bull of the defence system).

Basically youll have a marked increase in resistance to infection.

Detoxification because there is a reduction in the build up of toxic wastes there is a lessening of free radical activity.

Reduction in core temperature due to a slowing down of the metabolic rate. This is another key requirement of any anti-aging approach. This effect can also be achieved by deep meditation methods.

Protein synthesis efficiency improves during fasting which leads to healthier tissues less prone to oxidation.

Recently scientists at the University of Southern California reported that fasting for 48 hours before receiving chemotherapy could help limit the treatment's toxic effects to cancer cellsand spare healthy ones.

This new finding may pave the way for higher and more frequent chemo doses (if youre into that sort of stuff) that better shrink tumors without harming normal cells.

Right now, caution here. Fasting is like a marathon, you dont just wake up and run 42km tomorrow. You must train for it.

Start slow. One night a week. Have a late lunch and miss dinner.

Do that for a few weeks at least. Then one day a week, miss lunch and dinner and do this for more than a few weeks. Then you are ready to attempt a day. I fast one day a week and have for the last 10 years and three times a year I fast three to four days.

A note for the beginners: like most things timing is everything. Say for example youre in the singles market and are planning on doing some dating, make sure you dont plan an important dinner for a day youre fasting not a good impression. The personals world can be a bit unforgiving!

If you have blood sugar issues, you really need to proceed with extreme caution. Buy some books on fasting, research thoroughly before using your body as a guinea pig. Also if there is a history of gout, tread cautiously.

Ultimately this is a fantastic system for good health and vitality, youll be amazed at just how good you feel after missing an evening meal.
